“Why do you want to do that?”

I stumble.
My heart catches in my throat
And I can’t think straight,
Finding myself immediately on the defensive.

“Because its what I want to do.”

Why do you want to do that?”

Difference in intonation
Brings clarity
Same question but
Without the side order of judgement.

I consider my response.
Empowered, I elucidate.

“Why? Because it gives me hope,
Because it makes me happy.”
